Dr. Richard witnessed a chiropractic miracle; and got to be a part of one too…

While an Intern at the Sherman Health Center, I witnessed a chiropractic miracle. A baby, perhaps a year old, was brought into the Clinic for emergency care. The baby had been crying for two days, to the point that it could hardly cry any longer. Its eyes were glazed over. I noticed this first, because being raised on a farm, I had seen many sick animals, with that same look, that often didn't make it through the night. That child had that same hopeless look.

The floor doctor was very calm and directed with purpose in his voice as he guided and directed a student intern through each step of the toggle adjustment that was delivered to the atlas of that baby. Instantly, the baby stopped it’s crying and fell asleep. The next day the child was returned to the clinic for a post check. I was in total amazement. I almost could not believe it was the same child! It was truly a miracle. Praise God! I wouldn’t have given you a plug nickel for the life of that child 24 hours earlier.

In the second miracle, I got to be a participant! I was asked to go on a missionary journey to Vallaho de` Terraca (Terraces of the valley) Mexico, with a church group. I agreed to go if I could bring my table and adjust the Mexican people all day long.

I set up in the kitchen of the mission building and opened the door at 10 AM to a long line of patients waiting to see me. I saw people who, I am sure, had never been adjusted by a chiropractor before in their life. One man came in and climbed onto my table who had a severe scoliosis (lateral deviation) in his spine, perhaps a six or seven inch lateral curvature of his spine. I thought to myself, what am I to do in this situation?  I decided that I would adjust him the same way that I would adjust anyone else. I laid my hands upon this man and before my eyes I watched the lateral curvature disappear! It was so clearly visible because the man was wearing a red plaid shirt with black vertical lines. I immediately turned to my interpreter and said, “Did you see that?” And she responded “Yes!” The man got up and walked away, kind of like that was what he expected to happen. I do not know the man’s name, or what became of him, but I often think about the day that I got to be a part of a chiropractic miracle! An experience I will never forget!

How a Turkey Changed My Life!

It was the day before Thanksgiving… My family & I were living on a little ranch in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. My wife told me that if we were going to have Tom, our pet turkey, for Thanksgiving dinner, I would have to catch him before he went to roost. As fate would have it, dusk fell & I did not get the bird captured before he flew up onto the fireplace chimney of our house to spend the night. I would not admit defeat to an animal with a brain the size of a thimble, so I proceeded to climb up a ladder onto the roof of our house to capture the bird. As I reached for the turkey, he escaped to the peak of the roof, just beyond my reach. I stretched out on the roof in frustration, twisting my back, just as I grabbed hold of ole` Tom’s leg. There I lay, immobilized, flat on my back with a turkey in clutch, and determined not to let go!

My wife, Linda, rescued me from my precarious position and, after securing the turkey, rushed me to a Chiropractor. It was an experience I’ll never forget. I was in so much pain, that I didn’t want anyone to physically touch me! The adjustment was over in an instant, and the pain was gone! That is the moment I decided I wanted to become a chiropractor, so I could pass that miraculous service on to others.

Our life changing educational experience.

In the Fall of 1988, after getting our prerequisites out of the way at Eastern Wyoming College, selling everything that we could not pack into our van & cargo trailer, my wife Linda & I headed off to San Lorenzo, CA where we had both been accepted for enrollment at Life West Chiropractic College. Innocent at that time, and not knowing anything that we know now, of the political division that exists in chiropractic; traditionally referred to as straights & mixers within the profession, we started our chiropractic education. We were at Life-West for three trimesters when Dr. Reggie Gold came to town. Dr. Gold was an outspoken Philosopher of Straight Chiropractic.

He was so controversial that he was not allowed to speak on our campus. Reggie would rent the San Leandro Marina Meeting Center (out of his own pocket) and pack the place with students from both Life-West and Palmer-West Chiropractic Colleges to introduce us to Chiropractic Philosophy.

The first time we heard Dr. Reggie Gold, we went as skeptics. We wanted to know what this man had to say that was so controversial that he was not allowed to say it on campus. That was the night we got the “Big Idea”, and all else followed!  We realized at that moment we were in the wrong school, for all the wrong reasons. We knew in order to be true to our beliefs; we would need to transfer to Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic, and that would facilitate a move all the way across the United States of America to Spartanburg, SC, which we did.

About Linda and Richard

Linda and Richard met in Rapid City, SD. Having been both been recently divorced; they were two very lonely people, looking for some happiness. Richard, on the West-side, was praying that God would bring him a Christian woman… While Linda, was on the East-side praying that God would bring her a Christian man.  All I can say is; be very careful what you pray for, because God just might give you what you ask! Richard met Linda after having lunch with her boss and returning to the Radio station where she worked. Richard was quite smitten with both Linda’s voice and her physical presence. He asked her boss about Linda, and was told, “Forget her; because she already has a boyfriend in Montana.” When exiting through the front office, where Linda was casually sitting atop a desk, Richard thought he would make a lasting impression on Linda’s psyche by saying something clever… Unfortunately, he couldn’t think of anything “cool” to say, and being under the pressure of the moment to say something, he blurted out a question… “Which way is it to the Men’s room?” Later that afternoon, after Richard collected his bearings, he called Linda at the Radio station and told her that he had a proposition for her, and arranged a meeting for Linda to come to his office the next afternoon for a job interview. She showed up for the interview and Richard hired Linda on the spot, as an off-site sales person for “Deerfield Park”, a time-share resort condominium project where they both worked in the beautiful Black Hills of SD. One day, when they arrived at their office, they found the doors were chained and locked. It seems the Savings & Loan Assn., that owned Deerfield Park, had become insolvent, went into receivership and the Feds closed them down! Linda & Richard went to “Perkins” for coffee, to lick their wounds, and to come up with a plan; for they were both now out-of-a-job. After a lengthy courtship that lasted all of five weeks, and in view of the predicament in which they both found themselves; Richard asked Linda if she wanted to get married, and she said, Ok! Linda & Richard were married that evening, July 24, 1981, at Mount Rushmore, right under the nose of Abraham Lincoln! They got a Marriage License, found friends to stand with them to witness the grand occasion, after Linda did her sales-job of the decade, in finding a preacher that would agree to marry them, providing they would both agree to take the prenuptial classes after the fact, and promise to seek his council should they ever contemplate divorce. 25 years later, all we can truthfully say is; “God works in strange and mysterious ways.”

Dr. Clemens Asks some important questions of interest to Burlington residents - Chiropractor Burlington Dr. Clemens Asks...

Will chiropractic adjustments make my spine too loose?
No. Only the spinal joints that are fixated and "locked up" receive attention. The occasional spinal joint that moves too much is passed over so weakened muscles and ligaments can strengthen and heal.
If you have a fever, are you sick or healthy?
Chiropractors love asking this question because it gets to the root of the chiropractic difference. Turns out fevers, vomiting, coughing and even sneezing are all healthy responses. It means your body is working correctly. Taking medications to suppress these natural processes can actually prolong your recovery.
